Trail Extension, 2021
MMTD, IAAC

The project extends UCSD's trail from the cliff to the beach, using a lightweight structural system designed for easy on-site assembly. Adapting to the topography, the trail creates rest or study spaces at each descent level. Inspired by historic wooden railways and bridges, the design employs mass timber—specifically Glulam for the skeleton and CLT for the shell—offering both strength and lightness. The modular design can be adapted for rest areas, vacation shelters, or research centers along the California coast, with minimal site impact. Timber is sourced from certified forests in Northern California, ensuring a low environmental footprint.
